Flower pin & stitch marker tutorial

A warm welcome to my sparkly new website!

As a little celebration and a gift to you, kind readers, I have put together a new tutorial for some cute felt accessories for every kind of maker.

For the stitchers, there are some sweet flower pins. Simple felt blooms are hand stitched together, with a flat head pin sandwiched between.

I might just be addicted to making these little pins in every possible combination of colours!

Instead of stitching the felt flowers onto pins, you can attach them to toggle hooks to create perfect stitch markers for crocheting.

Or use them as nifty zipper pulls.

Or attach the flowers to brass split rings to make stitch markers for knitting.

Step 1

Download your free PDF copy of this tutorial by clicking on the button above. The one page PDF has a summary of the tutorial and the pattern for the petal shapes and flower centres.

Print the PDF. IMPORTANT: Take care when printing the PDF that the page scaling option in your printer settings is set to ‘NONE’ (or ‘100%’, depending on your software). You don’t want your printer to ‘fit to page’ or ‘scale to fit’. Please make sure that the arrow printed on the pattern measures 1 inch. This ensures that your printer has printed the pattern at the correct scale.

You will need:

·     scraps of felt
·     embroidery floss in colours to match felt scraps
·     fusible web, such as Heat 'n' Bond
·     flat head sewing pins OR 11mm toggle hooks
      OR 10mm split rings

Step 2

Using a sharp pencil, trace two petal shapes and two flower centres on the paper side of the fusible web, leaving about 1/8 inch between them.  Fuse the shapes to your desired felt colours.

Step 3

Using small sharp scissors, cut out the shapes carefully on the pencil line.  Peel the fusible web backing paper from the flower centres and fuse to the right side of the petal shapes.

Remove the backing paper from the petal shapes. Using embroidery thread to match the colour of the felt, work small straight stitches in one strand around the flower centre.

Step 4

FOR THE STITCHERS

Match the two petal shapes back to back, and sandwich a flat head pin between them.  Carefully fuse the shapes together.

Matching the colour of the felt, work blanket stitch in one strand around the flower petals to encase the pin head.

FOR THE CROCHETERS

Match the two petal shapes back to back, and carefully fuse the shapes together.

Matching the colour of the felt, work blanket stitch in one strand around the flower petals.

Attach the flower to a toggle hook with several straight stitches.

FOR THE KNITTERS

Match the two petal shapes back to back, and carefully fuse the shapes together.

Matching the colour of the felt, work blanket stitch in one strand around the flower petals.

Attach the flower to a brass split ring with several straight stitches.
